Kiln share in Margate

Fire your pots with me in my garden studio! Affordable and flexible electric kiln hire and sharing in Margate, Kent.

What I Offer

I’m a part-time potter with a small garden studio that I’ve recently fitted with a Rhode Ecotop 60L kiln named Elektra.

I often have extra firing capacity and as a long-time renter, I know the struggle of needing kiln space in a pinch, so am looking for local potters to help fill my kiln and put her to good use.

I fire to biscuit and cone 8 regularly for my own work, and my studio mate fires to cone 6. You can find spots for your work in our firings, or hire Elektra all to yourself for different temperature firings!

  • Bring your bone-dry greenware to the studio for cone 07 biscuit firing alongside my and my studio mate’s work. Available for one-off pieces, shelves, and full kiln hires.

Individual items are charged at a flat rate of £1 per cubic litre, shelves £10 up to 10 cm and full kiln rate is £25.

If your work is looking too damp for immediate firing, we often have a very small amount of space available for a few pieces to dry until ready for firing, where it will be added to the next available biscuit fire.

  • We’re happy to make space for your work in our regular cone 6 and cone 8 firings. We can fit in individual small pieces, or work on a shelf basis.

Rates for joining our firings are a flat £2 per cubic litre (lying flat), or £10 per shelf for pieces up to 10 cm tall.

Shelves are 35 cm in diameter, but remember to make space for kiln furniture and space between your pots!

We ask that you use commercial clays and glazes, rated for cone 6 or 8, and share the details of your materials and previous results before we fire.

  • Have lots of pots? Want to fire to a different temperature than we do? Elektra is available for hire for a flat rate of £25.

As with our individual piece firings, we ask that you use commercial clays and glazes. If you’re using your own glaze recipe, we’ll need details of your recipe, examples of previous firing, and may request that your fire on cookies to protect our shelves.

Reach our with details of your clays, glazes, and firing needs and we can discuss which kiln programme suits you best.

  • For your first firing, we will have a quick exchange about your needs and how we can work together. We’ll measure up your work and agree on a rate.

I will load all your work into the kiln and manage the firing process. I’ll provide updates along the way and let you know when your work is ready for collection!

As a small garden studio, we cannot guarantee specific turnaround times, but are happy to discuss what’s possible when you contact us with your needs. We try to fire at least every Sunday!

As an extremely well-insulated kiln, Elektra takes about 12 hours to fire and another 18-24 to fully cool. At minimum, expect 3 days for your work to be fired from kiln loading.

I will do my best to ensure a reliable firing for your work, but cannot take responsibility for cracks, glaze defects or the like (acts of the kiln gods if it were).

If your work causes damage to kiln shelves or the kiln due to forseeable circumstances (not sharing an accurate glaze recipe/make details, firing to wrong temperature for your materials), I may ask for you to share the cost of replacement shelves.
